Ask the CryoStork® : What should I know before shipping my frozen embryos or reproductive materials?

As conversations around fertility take center stage during World Infertility Awareness Month, many people find themselves thinking about next steps, especially when those steps involve moving frozen embryos, eggs, or sperm from one place to another. For some, it’s part of a clinic change. For others, it’s tied to surrogacy, relocation, or simply preparing to move forward after time has passed.

No matter the reason, the idea of shipping something so important can feel overwhelming. For many intended parents, this is one of the moments when the reality of the journey becomes very tangible. Until now, your reproductive materials may have remained in one place, safely stored. Shipping changes that. It introduces movement, coordination, and the natural question of what this actually involves.

One of the most important things to understand is that not all shipping processes are the same. How materials are handled, monitored, and protected can vary significantly depending on the provider. When you begin looking into transport, you may notice differences in language. Some providers emphasize temperature control, others may highlight tracking, and some speak to regulatory standards. These details all matter because they reflect how carefully each step is managed behind the scenes.

At its core, transport should feel controlled and deliberate. It shouldn’t feel improvised or uncertain.

Shipping reproductive materials carries emotional weight alongside the materials themselves. It can represent a transition in care or the start of a new chapter. It can also bring up hesitation. Many intended parents find themselves double-checking timelines or needing reassurance that everything will be handled properly. That response is completely natural.

Understanding the process can help ease some of that worry. Transport typically involves coordination between the originating clinic, the receiving clinic, and the transport team. Timing is carefully aligned, and the materials are prepared for shipment in specialized cryogenic shipping systems that are custom-engineered to maintain stability throughout the journey. The goal is consistency from start to finish, even when materials are moving across distance, and sometimes, across oceans and geographic borders.

For intended parents, much of this work remains invisible, and that’s often how it should be. A well-managed process allows you to stay focused on the bigger picture, rather on the details of how each step is being executed. But for this to work, there’s an enormous amount of trust you need to have in your shipping provider and how they handle the transportation of such sensitive materials.

At Cryoport Systems, we approach reproductive transport with that philosophy in mind. Our role is to bring structure and reliability to a moment that can otherwise feel uncertain. With validated shipping systems, continuous condition monitoring, and established Chain of Compliance® standards, we focus on maintaining stability throughout the entire journey.

And just as importantly, we recognize that this is so much more than logistics. For the people we support, these shipments represent something deeply personal. That understanding shapes how we communicate, how we plan, and how we ultimately manage each shipment from origin to destination.

There isn’t a single “right” way to feel before shipping your embryos or reproductive materials. Some people feel ready or even excited, while others feel nervous, even when they understand and trust the process. Both reactions can even exist at the same time.

If you’re approaching this step, it may help to remember that careful preparation and experienced handling make a meaningful difference. You don’t need to carry every detail on your own, this is a point in the journey where having the right partners matters.

As awareness grows around infertility and fertility care, so does the recognition that these moments deserve both technical precision and human understanding. Shipping may just be one step in a bigger fertility and family-building journey, but it’s an important one, and it should feel supported accordingly.

At Cryoport Systems, we’re here to help ensure that when the time comes to move forward, your materials (and your trust) are handled with care.
